Black History Month Programming

Rensselaer Union is proud to present the activities and events being sponsored by student clubs and organizations during Black History Month. These inclusive programs are open to the entire Rensselaer community. Please join us at these celebrations and educational events!

February 1st - 28th - Clubhouse Pub Celebrates Black History Month

Open 4:00pm-12:00am (Monday-Saturday), Rensselaer Student Union, Clubhouse Pub

Travel our nation's rich cultures through southern style comfort foods during Friday Happy Hours.  Learn more about several Rensselaer African American alumni and celebrate Black History Month with events throughout the month.

Tuesday, February 10th- NSBE PCI: Discussion on Cultural Appropriation.  3:30pm

Friday, February 13th - Coffeehouse Jazz Night

5:00-8:00pm, Rensselaer Student Union, McNeil Room

A community event featuring Grammy winning spoken word poet, J. Ivy and the RMA Contemporary Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Leaders. This event is hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha and is sponsored by the Office of Student Activities and the Black Students' Alliance.

Saturday, February 21st - BSA Fashion Show

7:00pm, Rensselaer Student Union, McNeil Room

An annual event sponsored by the Black Students' Alliance, this event features the entrepreneurial designs of talented modern fashion designers and student models.

Monday, February 23rd - Gullah, a History, a Culture, a Unique People

12:00pm-1:00pm, Rensselaer Student Union, Shelnutt Gallery

A brown bag experiential luncheon about the culture. Enjoy a little food tasting and see artwork, then participate in a fun language lesson. Presented by Dr. Lucinda Grant Griffin

Join The Jazz Leaders in the Pub as part of their Black History Month Finale.

Friday, February 27th - "Selma" Discussion on Civil Rights Then and Now

6:00pm, DCC 318

Discussion focused on the Civil Rights movement and parallels between what happened then and what is going on in the United States today. Stay to watch the movie at 7:00pm with UPAC Cinema.

Friday, February 27th - UPAC Cinema presents "Selma"

7:00pm, 9:30pm, and 12:00am screenings, DCC 308

A chronicle of Martin Luther King's campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. This event is part of the UPAC Cinema line up for Spring 2015. All viewings will be free to RPI ID card holders only.  $2.50 for all others.  Sponsored by the Rensselaer Union Speakers Forum

Saturday, February 28th - Shelnutt Gallery Reception for "Art & Soul Abstractions"

2:30pm-6:00pm, Rensselaer Student Union Shelnutt Gallery (RU 3606)

Attend the reception to honor Black History Month with the artists of the show "Art & Soul Abstractions". Stay for the 3pm performance featuring Ensemble Congeros & Roots of Africa led by Dr. Ade Knowles. This show is co-sponsored with Black Students' Alliance.

Saturday, February 28th - UPAC Concerts presents "Mirk"

8:00pm, Rensselaer Student Union, Mother's

UPAC Concerts is glad to be adding to Black History Month with a concert by "Mirk." Formerly "Mirk & the New Familiars," this American musical group from Albany, NY was founded in 2009. Their musical style is characterized as a cross between the genres of pop, soul, R&B, and hip-hop.
